Worm gear sets should not be replaced only after failure. Waiting until teeth break or the drive seizes means the equipment is already stopped. Assessing wear in advance and scheduling planned replacement is the way to reduce unexpected downtime. This article explains how to judge.
1. Inspect the tooth flanks
Open the unit and inspect the worm wheel flanks:
– Smooth flanks with even contact pattern: normal.
– Light wear but contact area still adequate: can continue in service.
– Severe wear, clearly thinned tooth thickness, or spalling pits: must replace.
– Broken teeth: replace immediately; do not continue running.
2. Measure backlash
Use a dial indicator to measure mesh backlash of the worm and wheel. New reducers typically show 0.03–0.08 mm. If backlash grows to 2–3 times the original value and lost motion is obvious, it is time to replace.
With a dual-lead worm, adjust backlash first; only replace when adjustment reaches its limit and is still insufficient.
3. Listen to running noise
Normal operation is steady and continuous. Watch for:
– Periodic “clunk” sounds: flank wear or broken teeth.
– Sharp rubbing noise: insufficient lubrication.
– Irregular vibration noise: bearing damage or loose mounting.
4. Measure temperature
A healthy reducer housing should stay within about 60–70°C. A clear rise that feels hot to the touch points to accelerating wear or poor lubrication.
5. Plan ahead
Keep maintenance records by running hours and inspect flanks and backlash about every six months. When wear trends appear, order spares early—do not scramble after a failure.
