The biggest advantage of a dual-lead worm is that after wear you can restore backlash by moving the worm axially. Last month we helped a positioning-equipment customer adjust a dual-lead reducer from 0.12 mm backlash back to 0.03 mm, and equipment accuracy recovered.
1. Problem description
The customer’s machine performs precision positioning; original backlash had to stay within 0.03 mm. After two years of use, positioning drifted and backlash had grown.
On teardown, the worm and wheel showed normal wear without severe damage. Parts did not need replacing—adjusting backlash was enough.
2. Adjustment procedure
Step 1: Measure current backlash. Lock the worm, seat a dial indicator on the wheel rim, rock the worm back and forth; the reading is lost motion. The customer measured 0.12 mm—about four times the new value.
Step 2: Loosen the locknuts on the worm bearing housing. Do not remove the nuts fully—only enough to allow axial movement of the worm.
Step 3: Tap the worm end lightly with a copper drift and shift it axially in small steps of about 0.02 mm each time.
Step 4: After each move, rock the worm and re-measure. Stop around 0.03 mm.
3. Checks after adjustment
Once backlash is set, also verify:
– Smooth hand turning of the worm with no binding
– Mesh contact pattern centered on the tooth flank
– Backlash unchanged after re-tightening the locknuts
After trial running, positioning accuracy returned to new-equipment level without part replacement, saving cost.
4. Cautions
Smaller is not always better. If the worm feels distinctly tight at 0.03 mm, you have gone too far—ease back slightly. Excessively tight mesh hurts flank lubrication, raises temperature, and shortens life.
