Plane double-enveloping worm reducers are a newer transmission developed from conventional cylindrical worm reducers, with clearly improved load capacity and efficiency. This article introduces their features and suitable applications.
1. What is plane double enveloping
In a conventional cylindrical worm–wheel mesh, contact is line contact and the contact area is small. The tooth flank of a plane double-enveloping worm is a plane enveloping surface; when meshing with the worm wheel it becomes surface contact, so the contact area is large and load capacity rises.
Advantages of this structure:
– Load capacity is 2–3 times that of a conventional cylindrical worm
– Transmission efficiency improves, typically reaching 85–90%
– Tooth-flank wear is low and service life is long
– Running is smooth with low noise
2. Suitable applications
Plane double-enveloping worm reducers are suited to:
– Heavy-duty duty cycles such as mining, metallurgy and lifting equipment
– High ratio, high-torque transmission
– Continuous running where efficiency is critical
– Space-constrained machines that need a large reduction ratio without a large envelope
3. Comparison with conventional cylindrical worms
Conventional cylindrical worm reducers are simple and low-cost, suitable for general duty. Plane double-enveloping units perform better but are harder to machine and cost more. Selection should weigh the actual duty cycle.
If the load is modest and running is intermittent, a conventional reducer is enough. For heavy continuous duty with efficiency and life requirements, a plane double-enveloping design is more appropriate.
4. Operating notes
Plane double-enveloping worms and wheels must be manufactured as matched pairs and are not interchangeable. During installation, centre-distance accuracy must be assured and the mesh contact pattern must meet specification. Lubrication must be adequate and oil changed on schedule.
