In precision equipment, worm gear wear gradually increases mesh backlash, reducing positioning accuracy and enlarging lost motion. Standard worms cannot be readjusted once worn—only replaced. Dual-lead worms (variable tooth thickness) solve this by changing backlash through axial movement.
1. How Dual-Lead Worms Work
Standard worms have constant tooth thickness; dual-lead worms have different leads on left and right flanks, so thickness varies axially. Axial movement shifts the mesh position on each flank, changing side clearance.
The benefit: without disassembling the entire gearbox, axial repositioning restores initial backlash and extends set life.
2. Adjustment Procedure
Shut down equipment and mark reference positions before starting:
- Loosen lock nuts or bearing cover bolts at both worm ends.
- Measure current mesh backlash with feeler gauge or dial indicator.
- Move the worm axially in small increments—0.02–0.05 mm per step.
- After each move, rotate and recheck until target backlash is reached.
- Lock bearing nuts and verify backlash did not shift.
3. Applications Suited to Dual-Lead Worms
Dual-lead worms cost more—not every application needs them. Recommended when:
- Precision positioning with strict backlash requirements
- Continuous duty where wear increases clearance over time
- Difficult disassembly—extend life through adjustment
- Automation lines where maintenance downtime is costly
4. Adjustment Cautions
Smaller backlash is not always better. Excessive tightening impairs flank lubrication, raises temperature, and accelerates wear. For precision drives, 0.02–0.05 mm side clearance is typical—adjust to actual duty.
