Circular-arc cylindrical worms (ZC profile) deliver better mesh performance than standard Archimedean worms. This article covers machining essentials for arc worm gear pairs.
1. Circular-Arc Worm Characteristics
Arc worm flanks are concave, distributing contact lines more favorably with the wheel for improved lubrication, higher load capacity, and better efficiency than standard cylindrical worms.
- Larger contact area and load capacity
- Better flank lubrication and lower wear
- Higher efficiency and lower temperature rise
- Requires dedicated hobs and tooling
2. Machining Essentials
Worm machining: Arc worms require form tools or grinding wheels. Arc radius and surface finish must be accurate. After quenching, grinding is mandatory—milling alone is insufficient for finished quality.
Wheel machining: Wheels must be hobbed with a cutter matched exactly to worm parameters—arc radius, pressure angle, and lead must align or contact pattern will fail inspection.
3. Matched-Pair Requirements
Arc worm gear sets must be machined and used as matched pairs. Standard Archimedean worms cannot mesh with arc wheels, and vice versa.
After machining, verify contact pattern on a mesh tester—correct contact should appear mid-flank toward the exit side with at least 60% contact area.
4. Application Scenarios
Arc cylindrical worm pairs suit medium-to-heavy continuous-duty reducers: conveyors, mixers, and hoisting machinery. Recommended when efficiency and service life are priorities.
Dezhou Xinmi Machinery manufactures custom arc worm gear sets from drawings or samples with guaranteed pairing accuracy.
