1. Choosing Lubricant
Worm drives rely on sliding friction and need lubricants with strong anti-friction properties. Common choices:

- Worm gear dedicated oil: Formulated for bronze wheel/steel worm pairing.
- Lithium grease: For small grease-lubricated units—good sealing but poorer heat dissipation.
Do not substitute ordinary engine oil—insufficient anti-friction performance accelerates wear.
2. Correct Oil Fill Level
For oil-bath units, level should cover one-third to one-half of worm tooth height. Too little starves the mesh; too much causes agitation, overheating, and leakage.
After initial fill, run 30 minutes, stop, wait several minutes, then recheck level as oil distributes throughout the housing.
3. Oil Change Intervals
- First run: Change at 300 hours (break-in debris).
- Normal duty: Every 3,000–5,000 hours.
- Heavy/high-temperature duty: Shorten to 2,000 hours.
- Light/intermittent duty: Extend to 8,000 hours.
When changing oil, clean housing walls and drain plugs. Dark oil or metal particles warrant flank inspection.

- High oil temperature: Overfill, wrong grade, overload, or poor cooling.
- Leakage: High level, worn seals, blocked breather.
